Cubs starter Justin Steele stepped up in a big way on the international stage, holding the Cardinals to one run on five hits with eight strikeouts over six innings before being replaced by reliever Julian Merryweather to begin the bottom of the seventh.
Steele, who held the Cards hitless over the first four innings, lowered his ERA to 2.62, the third-lowest in the NL behind teammate Marcus Stroman and the Braves’ Bryce Elder.
